Insurance & Payment
-
At Nelson Family Dental, many of our patients have dental insurance — and we are happy to help submit claims on their behalf, when possible.
We are an insurance-independent office, which means we are not contracted with dental insurance companies to limit our recommendations to what a plan happens to cover. Our goal is to help patients understand what is happening, what their options are, and how to make thoughtful decisions about their dental health.
Dental insurance can be helpful. It just should not be the only voice in the room.

Many of our patients have dental insurance, and we help submit claims on their behalf.
However, Nelson Family Dental is an insurance-independent office. That means we are not an in-network, insurance-contracted provider with dental plans. Depending on your plan, you may still receive reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits. Please ask us how your specific insurance works with our office; chances are very good that we already have long-term happy patients with the same insurance as you.
-
Yes.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings about dental insurance. Being out-of-network does not usually mean you cannot be seen here. It simply means we are not contracted with that insurance company’s fee schedule or treatment limitations.
Many patients with dental insurance choose our office because they value careful diagnosis, clear explanations, actual case examples, and long-term relationships.
-
Our office can discuss available payment options before treatment begins. For larger treatment plans, we often phase care over time when appropriate.
A phased plan can help patients understand what is urgent, what can wait, and how to move toward a better long-term outcome without feeling rushed.
Our Financial Coordinator is an expert at helping patients understand their options.
-
Yes.
As a courtesy, our team can submit dental insurance claims on your behalf. We do this to help patients use the benefits available to them.
Insurance reimbursement depends on your specific plan, benefits, deductibles, limitations, waiting periods, yearly maximums, and out-of-network coverage. Every plan is different.
-
Payment is generally due at the time of service.
Because we are insurance independent, patients are responsible for the cost of care at the time treatment is provided. If your insurance plan provides reimbursement, payment from the insurance company may be sent according to your plan’s rules.
Our team can help explain the expected process before treatment so there are fewer surprises.
-
We believe dental decisions should be made by the patient and dentist — not by an insurance contract.
Insurance companies do not examine your teeth in person, we do. They do not see the complete picture; your photos, X-rays, digital scans, bite forces, gum health, old dental work, tooth wear, cosmetic goals, or long-term risks.
Insurance can help pay for care, but it should not be the system that decides what care is best for you.
-
No.
Dental insurance plans are designed around benefits, contracts, exclusions, and yearly maximums. They are not designed to diagnose your mouth or determine the best long-term treatment plan.
Our job is to explain what we see, discuss reasonable options, and help you understand the risks, benefits, timing, and tradeoffs of each choice.
-
We are happy to help patients use their insurance benefits, but we do not limit our recommendations to what insurance happens to cover. Sometimes the best long-term option is covered well. Sometimes it is not. Sometimes insurance covers a less ideal option better than the option that makes the most sense clinically.
We will help explain the difference so you can make an informed decision.
-
Sometimes, yes.
Insurance companies often set fee schedules based on contracts, not on the time, materials, planning, technology, experience, or detail involved in a specific case.
At Nelson Family Dental, our fees reflect the way we practice: careful diagnosis, detailed planning, quality materials, clear communication, and a relationship-based approach to care.
-
Careful dentistry does not mean doing more dentistry. It means making better decisions.
Some patients need very little treatment. Some need preventive care and maintenance. Some need a single filling or crown. Others need a phased plan for worn teeth, broken teeth, missing teeth, dental implants, dentures, cosmetic dentistry, or full-mouth reconstruction.
The goal is not to make dentistry bigger. The goal is to make it clearer.
